Read, Write, Comprehend and Spell check

It is disappointing to see the number of grammatical and spelling errors there are in articles written by many of the Hubbers. If you are writing in a language other than your home language it is understandable, but many of these errors are perpetrated by those who profess to be English speaking. Please do not misunderstand me I do not purport to be a perfect linguist but I refer to the basics.

We are all using these marvellous machines called computers and I believe that all the programmes come ready fitted with little Einstein’s behind the screen who are genius spellers and grammatical experts. All we sods must do is to click a button and the document is scanned. In this way we may even learn something.

Another way is to read through the article written. Does the sentence make sense? Have I followed the thread through the article or have I digressed? Have I wandered so far off the topic into the murky insanity of our mind? Or am I just too lazy!

In the legal realm a word in the wrong place or a wrong word used can affect the validity of a document.

When I was at school (and it was not in the dark ages) we had such subjects as reading, writing, spelling and comprehension. The thinking behind this was the more you read the more you can comprehend, the better you can write about novel topics and our spelling will improve. In later years I taught grade 1, 2 and 3 children, this is where the foundation is laid for the above mentioned. I have heard frightening statistics about the amount of illiterate children who are “processed” through the USA and UK school system – what a tragedy!!

Let us not get started on the ‘new’ language that has developed in sms world. C wot I mean, gr8 aint it! Sometimes this is too much effort so I will ‘c my bf @’ the movies but will ‘brb’ or is TMIF?

English is such a beautiful language, read Shakespeare, Robert Dunne, the Bronte sisters etc., listen to Henry Higgins speak in My Fair Lady. Read, write, comprehend and PLEASE SPELL CHECK at least put a little effort in.
