Should tighter gun laws be put in placed worldwide?

There is a well used phrase, perhaps over used, 'people kill not guns'! More people are killed by motor vehicles than guns, should we not rather regulate traffic laws and apply these more strictly. In my country an 18 year old is issued a drivers licence after a preliminary test and then a practical test, they are then licenced to drive. They climb behind the steering wheel of a high powered vehicle and speed off into the distance to celebrate. No special training on what to do in a torrential downpour, what to do when aquaplaning, no evasive driving techniques, no advanced driving training are required. The road worthiness of their vehcile is never brought into question!

However to apply for a firearm licence is equivalent to climbing Mount Everest. You need to pass a written exam, you need to complete a shooting course, you need to be able to assemble and care for the firearm. The firearm needs to be stored in a specially designed and installed safe and the Police inspect your home to ensure that this is complied with. Your neighbours are asked to attest to your character (I am sure this infringes some part of our Constitution). The result of all of these stricter 'gun laws' is that the usual law abiding citizen who wants a firearm for protection gives up during this tedious process or their attempts are thwarted.

On the other hand the 'illegal' firearm user obtains a firearm through the usual ingenious methods and are free to use these on the unarmed law abiding citizens.

Let us all rather ensure that the laws are correctly applied by well qualified Police Force and that our prosecutorial justice system is of the highest standard.
